Event Details

The Royal Edinburgh Community Gardens is a pilot project initiated by Dr. Charles Winstanley, Chair of NHS Lothian, to explore options around temporary use of NHS Lothian land. The vision has been to create opportunities for healthy lifestyles in the communities in which NHS Lothian hospitals are based, and to provide a facility to support patients on their road to recovery. The pilot project has been managed by Edinburgh Cyrenians following a competitive tendering process. This afternoon event is intended to review the progress of the pilot project and to share the learning gathered from its development.

The Gardens
The community gardens feature common growing areas and plots for vegetables, fruit, herbs and flowers. They aim to address health inequalities by providing access to a shared green space and by ensuring that everybody is welcome and can become involved.

The promotion of mental and physical health, and building inclusive communities, have been core aspects of the approach. There has been scope for patient and NHS staff involvement and particular effort has been made to create opportunities for people in the community who might generally face barriers in being involved in activities like this. Environmental sustainability is also central, through the production of locally grown food and the use of techniques such as composting.
